Gewürztraminer

The Gewürztraminer is a South Tyrolean white wine aromatic that intrigues with its tropical and spicy aromas that captivate from the first sip. In our selection of the best wines online you will find the best Gewürztraminer from Italy and abroad, produced by famous wineries that have written its wine history. The meaning of Gewürztraminer is literally "Spiced Traminer", a name that confirms both the aromatic traits of this wine (Gewürz means spicy, fragrant) and its origin from Tramin (Traminer in German), in South Tyrol. In fact the origin of Gewürztraminer is as doubtful as ever, because even France claims its paternity, citing similarities with Savagnin, a grape from the Jura from which vin jaune is made. On the other hand, this aromatic grape reaches levels of extraordinary opulence and elegance precisely in France, in Alsace to be precise.
I Gewürztraminer wines alsatians, are among the most intense on the nose and in the mouth that France has to offer, true cornucopias of abundance, capable of holding up very structured dishes. It is precisely in this area that you can try the best Gewürztraminers from "Sélection de Grain Nobles" (literally "selection of noble berries"), made from grapes attacked by Botrytis Cinerea, the so-called noble rot. These are wines with a good sugar content, mitigated to the drink by the acid shoulder, which balances the sip in a well-balanced way.
In addition to Alto Adige and Alsace, the Gewürztraminer white wine is also produced in Trentino, Germany (in Germany's Rhine Valley area), overseas, in the United States, where Gewürztraminer is part of the wines of California, Washington and Oregon, and then in New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, where unusual interpretations of this multifaceted white triumph.

Aromatic wine par excellence the Gewürztraminer remains the symbol of the South Tyrolean viticulture, of which there are two types: the first and more common pinkish-white and the second less common red traminer.
It is made from an aromatic vine whose grapes are covered with the typical pink skin; difficult to grow because it only takes a few disturbing elements to compromise its yield, it is found mainly in northern Italy, between Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (same with Müller-Thurgau), in a mountain landscape dominated by clay and limestone soils particularly suited to the production of these grapes (the finest are found in the area between Lavis and Cambra, from which the best Gewürztraminer).
Its grapes are sweet and thick-skinned; the color of this white wine is straw yellow with reflections tending toward golden and hints reminiscent of spices and candied fruit; the taste is traditionally sweet and aromatic. We are in the territory of noble and multifaceted wines: at the first sip you will be intoxicated by an explosion of fragrances, on the palate it will be dense and full-bodied, while the aromatic bouquet is fruity and lively enhanced by spices ranging from cloves to pepper and gingerbread, as well as rose petals and tropical fruits.
Characterizing the Gewürztraminer grape variety are small, rounded, pentagonal-shaped leaves; the grape cluster is also rather small and averagely compact, while the berry is elongated, with a thick skin whose colors can vary from pinkish-gray to reddish-brown; the pulp, on the other hand, gives it its traditional aromatic flavor. It is a wine intended to ripen slowly with a harvest that begins in early September.
It is a sumptuous, explosive wine that can reach 15 degrees, recognizable with your eyes closed, not to be confused, however, with its progenitor Traminer, which instead has a less pronounced aromatic quality.
Vinified alone or together with other grape varieties, it gives rise to some of Italy's finest DOCs such as "Friuli Aquileia Doc" (Friuli Aquileia Superior Aromatic Traminer), "Trentino Doc" (Trentino Aromatic Traminer), "Friuli Grave Doc" (Friuli Grave Aromatic Traminer), "Colli Orientali del Friuli Doc" (Colli Orientali del Friuli Aromatic Traminer), "Carso Traminer Doc" (Carso Traminer), , "Friuli Isonzo, or Isonzo del Friuli Doc" (Friuli Isonzo Traminer aromatico), "Friuli Annia Doc" (Friuli Annia Traminer aromatico), "Friuli Latisana Doc" (Friuli Latisana Traminer aromatico), "Alto Adige Doc" (Alto Adige Traminer aromatico), "Collio Goriziano or Collio Doc" (Collio Goriziano Traminer aromatico).
The pairings with Gewürztraminer, best served at 10-12 degrees, are really out of the ordinary, because given the structure and aromas of the wine, they can accompany complex and structured dishes. Alsatians are suitable with both savory cheeses, such as Munster, and foie gras, and generally with all dishes containing eggs while the Alto Adige Gewürztraminer can accompany from appetizers to main courses of fish (especially steamed, grilled, raw or marinated shellfish), even oriental cuisine.

Unlike many white wines, it does not go well with particularly delicate dishes, complicit in the structure and alcohol content that make it ill-suited to this combination of flavors. But the impetuosity and complexity of the aromatic bouquet make it a perfect white with Thai and Japanese dishes: from Cantonese rice to sushi, there is no better pairing than with a glass of fresh, aromatic and well-balanced Gewürztraminer. They also love it with duck ravioli, especially if it has good residual sugar, or smoked foods such as speck, carne salada and mortàndela from Val di Non; not to be underestimated either is the pairing with white cheese pizzas and truffles. Desserts are a chapter apart: cheesecakes, tarts, pastries and apple strudel go perfectly with the fruity aftertaste of Gewürztraminer.
