Lombardy
One might think that in Lombardy, the leading region of the Italian economy, viticulture is of secondary importance.
On the contrary, on the hills of Oltrepò Pavese and Brescia, on the rugged lands of Valtellina and in other areas scattered throughout the region, the vine has flourished since ancient times. In 2009 about 1,277,000 hl of wine were produced, diversified by color and typology, 70% of which were red wines.
Spearheads of Lombard production are the bubblesDOCGFranciacorta, elaborated with the refermentation in bottle of base wines obtained mainly from chardonnay, and those ofDOCGOltrepò PaveseClassic Method, based on pinot noir,grape varietywhich in this area also produces excellent red wines.
Oltrepò Pavese is distinguished by a very broad ampelographic base, in which you can find chardonnay, italic riesling and pinot grigio, white muscat and malvasia, all white berried, even if the most characteristic vines are the reds barbera and croatina, often elaborated in nice sparkling versions with a delicate sweetish nuance.
In addition to the Franciacortas, in the province of Brescia there are interesting still white and red wines in the CurtefrancaDOC; produced mainly from international vines, as well as reds based on groppello in the Garda Bresciano area.
Further north, in Valtellina, the nebbiolo, here called chiavennasca, which finds an environment suitable for its needs even beyond the borders of the beloved Piedmont, here, in fact, gives excellent winesstructureand good longevity, especially inDOCGValtellinaSuperiorand Sforzato della Valtellina, the latter obtained with a partial drying of the grapes.
